About Shawish

Shawish is a virtual Indigenous marketplace whose mission is to help Indigenous businesses thrive across North America. Within the online platform, Indigenous artists will be able to create their own profiles and upload their own products with limited fees. This site is perfect for any ally that wants to support First Nation Communities. Through Shawish, we as Indigenous people, continue our ancestor’s way of life.

About Amanda

Amanda (she/her) is a member of the Madawaska Maliseet First Nation. While working with Indigenous youth at a Foundation, Amanda noticed how many North American Indigenous artists created their own products for sale. Their work was always beautiful whether it was beading, clothing or art. However Amanda did not feel that their work was on display as much as it could be. Amanda created Shawish to highlight these talented Indigneous artists and to encourage the traditionals of her ancestors. Amanda currently resides in Toronto, ON.

About the Name

Through the passing of stories it has been told that Amanda’s great great great grandpa’s last name was Shawish. When settlers forced Native people to change their last name, Amanda’s ancestors decided on Bernard as this was the name of the community’s favourite priest at that time. The website was named Shawish to honour Amanda’s ancestors.

The sun within the logo was drawn by Jasmine Bernard, a member of the Madawaska Maliseet First Nation and also Amanda’s sister.
