Growing up amidst the mountains and ocean of Vancouver, Hilary developed lasting connection to the natural world. This bond was further intensified by the stark contrast she witness when moving to Kelowna at the age of seventeen. The reoccurring devastation of forest fires highlighted to Hilary, the urgent need to honour and preserve the nature of beauty.
