Mahihkan Design - Rachel McCloy Métis Artist

Tansi (Hello)!

I am a Cree-Métis-Danish artist practicing Métis Heritage arts with a contemporary blend. I specialize in handmade/handsewn traditional moccasins, (Northern Style Pucker-Toe Moccasins), as well as Métis silk embroidery, beading, writing, painting, and sewing. All of my moccasins are sewn fully and intentionally by hand, just like our ancestors, using tanned moose and deer hides, furs, and sheepskins! I create moccasins of all sizes, and offer a wide variety of styles such as low cuts with rabbit fur trim or leather trim, and wrap-arounds. I love creating custom designs, so if you dont see your size, please reach out to me and we can discuss creating a custom pair of moccasins for you!

About the Artist:

My name is Rachel McCloy. My cree name is Mahihkan Iskwew, which translates from Plains Cree to Wolf Woman. My name represents the teaching of Humility, as well as leadership, family, and strength. I am Swampy Cree Métis on my mothers side, and Danish on my fathers side. My family names include Cook, Traill, McKay, Sinclair, Favel, Ballenden, and McCloy. My family has strong ties to the historic Red River Settlement, and the Swampy Cree Indian reserve in Manitoba. I was born and raised in the Bulkley-Nechako region of Northern BC, and now reside on the unceded and traditional territory of the Lheidli T'enneh people (Colonially known as Prince George, Northern BC, Canada.) I am a citizen of the Métis Nation of British Columbia, and my local community is the Prince George Métis Community Association. I am a recognized artist through the Amelia Douglas Institute's Métis in BC Artist Collective (MBCAC).
