Sweetgrass Wicahpi

Hii! My name is Morningstar.

I am Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma (enrolled, White Turkey band), Lakota (Húŋkpapȟa & Oglala), Lenape (Delaware Tribe of Oklahoma), and Navajo (Tó'áhání bashishchiin dóó Áshįįhi dashinalí).

I chose the name Sweetgrass Wicahpi as I loooove the smell of sweetgrass and wicahpi means 'Star' in Lakota which I thought was a cute tie-in to my name!

Growing up I would watch my mother bead canes, keychains, and moccasins for her coworkers (she worked at Sherman Indian High School). I've always been a creative artistic person and since picking up beadwork it's been an amazing outlet to channel into. I find the process to be very meditative and feel pride in the pieces I create!

It's also been an amazing way to find community with other artist that show their work through social media. I love watching others bead as I'm always learning new techniques and ways to create, as well as learning about the person and nation they come from.
